The Giant Veg King: Derek Hulme and His Record-Breaking World of Produce

Introduction to a Legend

Meet Derek Hulme, the North Staffordshire champion whose name shines in the Guinness Book of World Records for his extraordinary feat: growing giant vegetables. This remarkable grower has turned heads in the allotment community with his stunning crops of gigantic proportions.

The Record-Breaking Achievements

Derek’s impressive portfolio includes a variety of colossal produce such as a massive cabbage, a gargantuan pumpkin, and notably, the world’s longest leek and heaviest runner bean weighing an astonishing 196g. His success springs from a unique strategy: saving seeds from his record-breaking harvests and sourcing high-quality seeds from renowned growers, including multi World Record Holders, Peter Glazebrook and Ian Neale.  Thanks to seeds from Peter, Derek produced his World Record Runner Bean!

A Community Pillar

As a proud member of the Sneyd Green-based Buxton Street Allotments, Derek is not just about personal achievements. He actively participates in seed swaps and promotes the growth of giant vegetables through online platforms. His contributions extend beyond his own plot, with his produce being showcased at prestigious competitions like the Canna Giant Veg competition and the Leek Town Show, fostering a vibrant community spirit.

Generosity Beyond Growth

Derek’s heart is as big as his vegetables. He generously donates excess produce to local charities, demonstrating his commitment to the community. His efforts go beyond cultivation; he aims to invigorate the allotment community’s passion for growing and hopes to reintroduce more vegetable shows to Stoke-on-Trent’s social calendar.
